Nurturing Nature-What a Bird Thought – Book Q A Class 6 Jasmine English

📖 (Page 80) Let us do these activities before we read

🌼 1. Look at the picture and discuss what you see in the picture with your teacher and classmates.

  • Answer: I see a large, green tree with a bird's nest resting on its branches. There is a mother bird feeding her baby birds in the nest, and a parrot perched on the trunk.

🌼 2. Think of a time when you worked hard. What did you do then? How did it help you? What made you feel so?

  • Sample Answer: I worked very hard on my science project. I spent hours researching and building a model. It helped me win first prize in the exhibition, which made me feel incredibly proud and happy!

🌼 3. Where are the places you see birds? What do you see the birds doing?

  • Answer: We see birds in trees, on balconies, in the sky, and near water bodies. They are usually flying, building nests, searching for food, or singing.

🌼 4. Do you want to fly like a bird? Why?

  • Answer: Yes, I want to fly like a bird so I can travel high up in the sky, touch the clouds, and look at the beautiful world from above.

🌼 5. What does a baby bird think about its world?

  • Answer: A baby bird thinks its world is only as big as its shell or its nest because it hasn't seen the outside world yet.

🌼 6. Read the sentences and replace the underlined words with their correct meanings.

  • (a) The colour of the feather was not dark but pale. ➡️ light

  • (b) The butterfly moved lightly and quickly on to the flower. ➡️ fluttered

  • (c) Finally, I finished my bird painting after trying many times. ➡️ at last

  • (d) The pretty flowers were the prize for the gardener's hard work. ➡️ labour

📖 (Page 82) Let us discuss

📝 1. Read the poem again. Identify the main idea of each stanza. Look at the pictures from (a) to (d) and write the matching line from the poem for each. (There are two extra given).

  • Picture 1 (Egg): (b) The bird lived happily in a small world.

  • Picture 2 (Nest): (f) The bird lived in a cosy nest with its mother.

  • Picture 3 (On the branch): (a) The bird steps out in to the world.

  • Picture 4 (Flying away): (d) The bird flies away as an adult.

📝 3. Answer the following with a word from the poem and check the answers with your partner. (Note: The book skips number 2)

  • (a) What was the shape of the bird's first house? ➡️ round

  • (b) What was the bird's second nest made of? ➡️ straw

  • (c) What did the bird see when it came out of its nest? ➡️ leaves

  • (d) What did the bird do at the end? ➡️ flew

📝 4. Now, recite the poem aloud along with your teacher and classmates.

  • (Activity to be done in class!)

📖 (Page 83 & 84) Let us think and reflect

(Questions 1 to 3 are from Page 83)

🤔 1. Write whether the following sentences are True or False.

  • (a) The bird changed its house two times. ➡️ True (It moved from an eggshell to a straw nest, and then out into the world).

  • (b) The neighbours tell the bird about the world. ➡️ False (The bird says neither it nor its neighbours know how the world is made).

🤔 2. Read the following lines from the poem and answer the questions given below.

  • (a) "I thought the world was made of straw, And nestled by my mother."

    • (i) Who lived in the nest along with the baby bird? ➡️ Its mother.

    • (ii) The bird thought the world was made of straw because ➡️ b. Its nest was made of straw.

    • (iii) Which word tells us that the baby bird was warm and comfortable? ➡️ nestled.

  • (b) "I said the world is made of leaves, I have been very blind."

    • (i) Why did the bird think the world was made of leaves? ➡️ Because when it stepped out of the nest, all it could see around it were the leaves of the tree.

    • (ii) How many times the word 'I' is used in the poem? ➡️ 10 times.

    • (iii) What does the set of words 'I said' mean? ➡️ c. spoke (or thought to itself).

    • (iv) Fill in the blanks: The bird felt that it had been very blind because it could not see the leaves from inside the nest.

🤔 3. Why did the baby bird think that its first world was small, round and blue?

  • Answer: The baby bird was inside an eggshell, which was small, round, and pale blue in color. It had never seen anything outside of it.

(Questions 4 to 6 are from Page 84)

🤔 4. Where did the bird go when it fluttered from its straw nest?

  • Answer: It fluttered past its nest to the leaves and branches of the tree.

🤔 5. What quality did the bird say it had, when it flew away?

  • Answer: The bird said it was "quite fit for grown-up labours" (meaning it was strong, mature, and ready to work like an adult bird).

🤔 6. Who do you think were the bird's neighbours? Why do you think so? Discuss.

  • Answer: The bird's neighbours were likely other birds, insects, and animals living in the same tree or nearby trees. I think so because birds share their habitat with many other creatures.

📖 (Page 84 & 85) Let us learn

(Question 1 is from Page 84)

✏️ 1. Let us write some rhyming words.

  • Stanza 1: well / shell ➡️ New word: fell

  • Stanza 2: other / mother ➡️ New word: brother

  • Stanza 3: find / blind ➡️ New word: kind

  • But one thing I surely know

  • Whenever I wish to rest,

  • My little nest is the best.

(Question 2 starts on Page 84 and continues to Page 85)

✏️ 2. The poet uses words like 'pale', 'blue', 'round', 'straw' and 'little' to describe the bird's nest. The describing words are known as Adjective... Now, use the describing words given in the box (pointed, green, thin, brown, small, wooden, hanging, round) to create six sentences based on the given picture.

  • (a) The beautiful birdhouse is completely wooden.

  • (b) It is hanging securely from a tree branch.

  • (d) There is a dark, round opening for the bird to go inside.

  • (e) A small brown bird is sitting near the opening.

  • (f) The tree has thin branches covered with fresh green leaves.

📖 (Page 85) Let us listen

🎶 1. You will listen to a short poem. As you listen, fill in the missing words.

  • I'm a parrot, my name is Paro,

  • My feathers are green and they glow.

  • In the morning, I spread my wings,

  • Fly around and see wonderful things.

  • Come with me through the skies so blue

    • What do you look like? I am brown and white in colour. I am a big bird. I have strong wings and sharp eyes.

    • Where do you live? I live in a large nest made of sticks. It is high up on a mountain cliff.

    • What do you do during the day? I fly very high in the sky to hunt for food. I also glide on the wind currents.

    • Do you have any message for humans? I want to tell humans to please stop cutting down forests and polluting the skies, so we can all live freely.

📖 (Page 86) Let us write

🖋️ 1. Read how the bird perceived its world. (Example provided in the text)

🖋️ 2. Now, discuss with your teacher and classmates how you think the world would look to the following: (a) a baby (b) a fish.

🖋️ 3. Now, write five sentences each, for both (a) and (b) in your notebooks.

  • (a) A Baby:

    1. My world is small and very soft at first.

    2. It is mostly my colourful crib and my cozy blankets.

    3. The biggest things in my world are the smiling faces of my parents.

    4. When I learn to crawl, my world becomes as big as the living room floor.

    5. Everything I see looks like a giant toy for me to play with or taste!

  • (b) A Fish:

    1. My world is wet, blue, and constantly moving.

    2. It is filled with colorful corals, rocks, and green seaweeds.

    3. My home doesn't have walls; it stretches as far as the water flows.

    4. I share my world with many other fish of different shapes and sizes.

    5. The top of my world is a bright, wavy ceiling where the sunlight dances on the water.

📖 (Page 86 & 87) Let us Explore

(Part 1 is from Page 86)

🔍 1. The bird's first home was made of a shell...

  • Look at your home carefully and make a list of all the materials it is made of: Bricks, cement, sand, iron rods, wood, glass, tiles, and paint.

  • Why do you think our homes are not made of straw?: Straw is not strong enough to protect us from heavy rain, strong winds, and extreme weather. It can also catch fire easily.

  • If you had to own a home of your choice, what would it look like and what materials would you like to use?: I would love a treehouse! It would be made of strong timber wood, with large glass windows to let the sunlight in and vines decorating the walls.

  • How is a home different from a house?: A house is just a physical building made of bricks and cement. A home is a place filled with love, family, memories, and comfort.

(Part 2 is from Page 87)

🔍 2. Look at the list of some workers who build houses. Find out the work they do and write.

  • 1. painter ➡️ Paints walls, doors, and ceilings.

  • 2. electrician ➡️ Installs and repairs electrical wires, fans, and lights.

  • 3. plumber ➡️ Fits and fixes water pipes, taps, and sinks.

  • 4. carpenter ➡️ Makes and repairs wooden doors, windows, and furniture.

  • 5. architect ➡️ Designs the layout and plan of the building.

  • 6. welder ➡️ Joins metal parts together for gates and grills.

  • 7. interior designer ➡️ Plans the decoration and arrangement of the inside of the house.

🔍 3. Look at the different kinds of nests and homes the birds make. Have you seen any? Discuss these type of nests with your teacher and classmates.

  • (Activity to be done in class based on the pictures provided on page 87!)
